Parinamah - Change & Transformation in Yoga

Guest Instructor: Kathryn Payne

Owner of Island Yoga of Vashon; founder of Pacific Yoga Teacher Training.

In this course we will reflect upon change by reading the yoga sutras that reveal this phenomena in the outer world and within the human being. Change can be a source of anxiety and discomfort – and also an opportunity for transformation and growth. How do we reconcile our personal perceptions with a changing outer landscape – how do we direct and feel our own inner changes toward positive transformation? We will spend ample time to reflect upon these questions in the context of asana, pranayama and meditation and feel refreshed and inspired by our deepening and layered practice.

Kathryn Payne has taught yoga for 30 years. She studied extensively in the Iyengar tradition before meeting Dona Holleman, who certified her to each her methods in 2000. She is also a certified Vijnana teacher and continues her yoga studies Orit Sen-Gupta, the founder of Vijnana yoga. Her greatest understanding of yoga’s depth and unparalleled wisdom comes through her study of Sanskrit with master teacher Vyaas Houston. All of her teachers emphasized independence and discovery of the teacher within. Kathryn trained teachers through Pacific Yoga for 17 years  and co-owns Island Yoga Center on Vashon Island, where she is the Director of its Advanced Study program.

Healing Circles Weekend

Guest Instructor: Patti Wolfrom

What are Healing Circles?

There is a difference between meeting in a circle and invoking or calling a circle.

The circle is the mother of methodologies: the CAMPFIRE that our ancestors gathered around to build tribe or clan.

A circle is also a living entity, a full-bodied presence that we are creating together.

The circle is an invitation to discover a deeper way of being together, protected by agreements which we’ll explore in detail.

“if it touches your heart and guides you on your path, it is a Healing Circle”

Michael Leaner, president, Commonweal

Hall Marks of Healing Circle:

*Healing Circles help us step out of ordinary time into a safe and accepting environment in which each of us can explore our own healing.

     * With OPEN MINDS, we work together to discover the best ways to remove obstacles to healing, alleviate suffering, and deepen our capacity to heal.

     * With OPEN HEARTS, we access our own inner guidance to understand where the greatest healing, in body , emotions, mind, and spirit -can occur.

     * Discovering your own purpose is a vital first step which you can return to time and again, as a touchstone for life.  Healing Circles are typically born out of love and a desire for service.

“We heal in community”   Rachel Naomi Remen M.D.

Learning Objectives:

Know the Hallmarks of a healing circle

Participate as a Host and or guardian of a circle

Understanding Circle Agreements

Guide Heart sharing sessions

Demonstrate ability to honor silence

Nurture and embrace mystery and uncertainty

Practice relying on the spirit of the group

TRAUMA SENSITIVE YOGA- AS A PATHWAY TO ANTI-OPPRESSIVE PRACTICE

Guest Instructor: Morgan Vanderpool

A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN TCTSY FOR YOGA TEACHERS, HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS, HEALERS & ACTIVISTS

This professional training is designed for yoga teachers, social workers, activists, mental health clinicians, educators, and other health care professionals who are looking to deepen their understanding of the whole-system impact of complex, intersectional trauma.

Additionally, it is designed to support those professionals in expanding their current practice, to incorporate the Evidence Based Practice of Trauma Center-Trauma Sensitive Yoga; through learning how to integrate healing the impacts of complex trauma on the nervous system, via trauma sensitive movement and breath.

Emphasis is placed on how the core components of the practice and process of trauma sensitive yoga, are also the building blocks to any anti-oppressive & trauma sensitive work. The training will provide specific tools to support participants to facilitate trauma sensitive movement and breath practices that are vital to the healing process of complex trauma (a.k.a. the many faces of systemic oppression) in personal, professional, community-based or system-wide relationships.

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence-based adjunctive treatment for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). TCTSY is the only yoga-based practice endorsed by SAMSHA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs & Practices.

This 15-hour training is based on sound research from the Trauma Center, of the Justice Resource Institute in Boston, MA.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga II: Tools for Practice

Guest Instructor: Janice Sack-Ory

The use of yoga as both an asana based practice and a mindful meditation practice facilitates the healing capacities of embodied presence. In this module, the student will obtain an understanding of empirically validated, adjunctive clinical treatments currently being offered for either PTSD, complex trauma, or both. Through both dynamic dialogue and experiential learning, the student will gain a deeper appreciation for the use of the full spectrum of what yoga can offer to those living with the challenges of the after effects of trauma.

The module will address the following areas as related to the teaching of yoga from a trauma sensitive (informed) perspective:

Trauma Theory

Attachment Theory

Neuroscience Underpinnings and related research

The Science of Mindfulness Meditation and Embodied Presence

The Non-dualistic teachings of Yoga

Trauma and its impact on the Whole: through exploration of the Koshas

            *The practice of iRest

iRest is integrative as it addresses both psychological and physical issues, such as stress, trauma, insomnia, and pain in your body and mind. iRest is restorative because it helps you recover your inner resources of joy, peace, and well-being. This enables you to feel connected to yourself and to live with meaning and purpose.

Yoga & Tantra Philosophy - Theory & Practice

Guest Instructor: Grace Bryant

Svadhyaya, self-study, is one of the essential components of yoga. It's a lifelong path of both learning from the masters and knowing ourselves more deeply. This weekend will be an exploration into Yoga and Tantra philosophy, including looking into the ancient lineages and how it relates to what we practice now. Not only will we read and discuss, we'll also connect the in-depth studies of classical texts with on-the-mat practices of asana, pranayama and meditation. The intention of this weekend is for practitioners to experience the essential connection of raja yoga, the path of study and knowledge, jnana yoga, the path of wisdom and experience, and hatha yoga, the practice of awakening, purifying and expanding the life force in our body. As a yoga teacher, this will give you more awareness about what the essence of yoga can truly offer: a path to freedom right here and now.

Grace Bryant has been a whole life educator for the past 15 years, integrating drama, music, movement, meditation and yoga, mindful living, creative play, teamwork, conscious collaboration and leadership. Her yogic path began in 2005 when her sister dragged her to a class in Federal Way. She fell in love with savasana and came back just for relaxation.

In 2007, Grace was inspired to start teaching and since then has studied and taught yoga and meditation in 7 countries and devoted her entire life to the journey of awakening. She has two 550 hour Yoga and Meditation Teaching Certifications, from Agama Tantra Yoga in Thailand and Hridaya Yoga of the Spiritual Heart in Mexico. Studying with the masters and teachers she has been blessed to meet around the world has changed the course of her life many times over and inspires her practice daily. She has taught at Three Trees Yoga and other local studios between her international teaching for the past ten years.

Grace’s favorite classes are those which deepen our consciousness and also incorporate how to live with more awareness, trust and compassion. She offers coaching, silent retreats, discussion groups, workshops, and women’s groups in the Pacific Northwest and abroad with a focus on bringing a yogic approach into every area of life. Through yoga, Grace has found a deep sense of peace and trust, and hopes to share this in her teachings. More information can be found at her website, www.bewholebehappy.com.
